The Health Benefits Of Drinking Red Wine

Thank you One Hope Wine! Did you know that One Hope Wine donates 50% of its profits to select charities! What an amazing company.

The Italians have a saying: “One barrel of wine can work more miracles than a church full of saints.” While this statement may be difficult to prove, studies suggest it could possibly be true. For a number of years, scientists have been paying a lot of attention to the health benefits of drinking red wine. What are some of the potential secrets to red wine’s miracle cure?

Many people have heard that a Mediterranean influenced diet is beneficial to your health. Why? The theory is that the high antioxidant levels contained in a diet full of fruit and vegetables extinguishes the free radicals and other oxidants which damage your cells and tissues. Similarly, red wine contains antioxidant chemicals that have also been credited with a lowered risk of heart disease. Antioxidants act as a biological “army” to protect the lining of your blood vessels from developing the dangerous fatty plaque that causes atherosclerosis. This plaque is developed from damaged (oxidized) fat molecules that begin collecting within the lining of the blood vessels. Antioxidants sacrifice themselves by taking the place of the tissue and cells so that they are not damaged and can thus continue with their regular metabolism.

Red wine is rich in a class of compounds known as polyphenols, which can also be found in teas, chocolate, and fruit. These compounds are involved in the quality of the wine because they influence the color, bitterness, astringency, and chemical stability. Polyphenols have been associated with numerous cardiovascular benefits: they reduce blood clots, relax blood vessels and promote healthy cholesterol metabolism.
In one clinical study, volunteers were asked to drink 12 ounces of red wine daily for two weeks. At the end of the study, researchers concluded that a moderate daily intake of red wine was associated with a slight increase in HDL cholesterol levels as well as an increase in chemicals that act as antioxidants in the blood. Another research study determined that moderate wine drinkers have lower incident of hypertension related mortality.

In a third notable study, researchers took all of the information above one step further and recruited 15 volunteers with coronary artery disease. They asked volunteers to drink 8.5 ounces of red wine everyday for the first two weeks, and then switch to 8.5 ounces of non-alcoholic wine for the next two weeks. Results of the study showed improved blood vessel functioning after the two weeks of drinking the alcoholic red wine.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis tested a variety of wines to determine which ones had the highest amount of polyphenolic compounds. Results of the tests indicated that Cabernet Sauvignon was at the top of the list, with Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir following closely behind.

So how much wine do you need to drink before you can reap these benefits? If a 4-ounce glass is equal to 1 serving of red wine, men should drink 2 servings per day, while women only need 1.

There are strong efforts in the scientific community to demonstrate that a moderate intake of red wine is beneficial to your health. So in staying with the Italian tradition, raise your glass and “Salute a cent’anno” (Health for 100 years)!

This was me and this is what I want to become....

Today is a great day, everyday is a great day! We can choose to walk through life miserable and unhappy, or we can choose to do the opposite. When you are unhealthy, overweight, and making bad choices it is difficult to greet each day with a positive attitude. You wake up everyday and you don't feel well. Your body aches, your head hurts, and your mind is clouded. When you begin to treat your body the way it should be treated, a funny thing happens. You attitude changes and you greet each day with a smile and look forward to all the possibilities that lay before you. You may wake up with an ache or pain, but it's because you busted your butt in the gym last night, and even if it hurts, it still brings a smile to your face because you know the hard work you are putting in is working. When you start making healthy choices in the foods you put in your body it's no surprise that your body responds amazingly and begins to function the way it was meant to. When you wake up feeling good and good about the choices you are making it radiates into everything you do.

At my highest weight I was over 380lbs. I could barely walk to the top of the hill in our neighborhood without feeling like I was going to die. It takes hard work, dedication, and making healthy choices to achieve your goals. Every day is not a walk in the park but with each step you get closer to being the person you were meant to be. So often we blame others or circumstances for our downfalls. The truth is once you being to hold yourself accountable for your actions and where you are in life, the sooner you can begin to become a better person. More authentic and more real. There is a healthy you inside of all of us just waiting to get out. There are temptations all around us but that does not mean we give into those temptations. Once you begin the transformation into a better you, the things that once tempted you no longer have that control over you. You begin to look forward to those fresh fruits, veggies, and lean protein. You get up and can't wait to get your gym time instead of that morning breakfast sandwich from the fast food joint down the block.

Food no longer runs your life. Ask yourself this question. Have you ever been eating a meal but were already thinking about what you will have for your next meal? This is when food controls your life. Break the cycle and change your thinking, change your attitude. Get off the couch, put down the cheeseburger, and hit the weights. Go for a walk. Bottom line do something to better yourself. You owe it to yourself and the people that love you.

Three specific goals I have with this challenge are first to live up to the no limitations attitude. Being overweight and unhealthy limits what you can do whether you want it to or not. I will no longer allow my unhealthy lifestyle to hinder anything I want to do. The second goal is to be a good example for everyone in my life and even those I do not know. Do not only talk the talk but walk the walk. When you live a healthy lifestyle it motivates others to do the same. I am not a father yet but when I am I want my children to live a happy and healthy lifestyle and I will be the best example for them to do that. The third goal is to live. Live a long happy life. The years that an unhealthy overweight lifestyle have taken from me, I want them back and I will get them back. I have a lot more to do in this life and I want all the time I can get to do it!

I have learned that only you can hold yourself back. Only you can set limitations on yourself. Do not live life chained to anything. Live free, healthy, happy and know that no matter what you want you can go get it if you just work hard enough.

I have a dream....

There is no failure if your only option is success. Do not allow failure to invade your thinking. My brother Zachary said one of the most profound things to me today and that is your mind is not your own.Your mind will lie to you and attempt to hold you back. It will restrict your thinking and inflict the same restrictive measures on your body. You have to learn to dictate to your own mind. Every day you can be of a different mind. Learn to shift your thoughts and perception to your greatest gain. Your mind is programmed to survive and therefore causes you to feel fear, pain, anger and hate. This survivalist reaction will only hold you back. When you come to the point where you are not only looking to survive any longer, you must rise above these restrictions. Learn to move past the pain and the fear. Use those feelings to push you further, not hold you back.

I am not dreaming anymore of what my future will hold for my health and my life. I am actively making it happen and I will do so without fear, and although there will be pain, I will feed off of that pain and use it to make me stronger. I will regain my health and be better than ever because failure is not an option, I will not allow it to be. I will not impose a limit on what I am capable of. If you do this, you have already failed. There is a short paragraph of a man talking about his time with Bruce Lee. He says that Bruce had him up to running 3 miles a day under 8 minutes a mile. One morning Bruce said "today we are going to go for five miles". The man said to Bruce I CAN'T do five miles! Bruce said "when we get to three we will shift gears and it's only two more to go". The man, with hesitation, agreed to go for it. After getting to the fourth mile the man begins to give out about three to four minutes into it. He says to Bruce "I am tired, my heart is pounding and if I run anymore I am going to have a heart attack and die". Bruce simply said "Then die". It made the man so mad that he finished the full five miles pushing through all the pain. When finished the man, upset, asked Bruce "why did you say that?" Bruce said "Because you might as well be dead. If you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it'll spread over into the rest of your life. It will spread over into your entire being".

This story spoke volumes to me. Every day we set limits on ourselves on what we can achieve, but why? What are we so afraid of?  Failing? So what, you won't fail if you keep pushing. Pain is only temporary and the harder you push and the more pain you endure the stronger you will come out on the other side.

This is not a game and this is not a test.  This is your life and you only get one. Don't waste your life in fear of the pain or in fear of failure. If you don't get up and just do it then you have already failed before you have even begun. If you stop because it hurts then you have failed yourself and you have no one to blame but yourself. I will take away from this challenge a renewed sense of myself and my limitless capabilities. I will not only be stronger physically, but mentally as well. Mind, body and soul you have to break it down to build it back up. When it hurts, that's not when you stop, that's when you push harder.  As my brother said to me,  when your mind is telling your body that the pain is too much, when the exhaustion is kicking in and you're just too tired to go on. Repeat to yourself "then die" As Bruce said it'd be better that you die giving it all you have with noting left to give than to live because you settled and conceded.

Live your life limitless. Unchained to restrictive thoughts. Your mind and body are capable of so much more than you realize. Do not allow yourself to settle, you can achieve much more than you realize. I am realizing this everyday of my life. I am taking away from this challenge not only a healthy lifestyle, but a new life.

Hello everybody! Well first let me start off by saying how great I feel! I am really enjoying every minute of this amazing journey with Genghis grill. I am full of energy and look forward to every new day. I want to list the top 5 reasons why I love Genghis grill.

1. This of course has to be the amazing healthy, nutritious and delicious food choices. You can always make something different everyday and try new things. Everything is always fresh and prepared to perfection.

2. The staff at Genghis grill is like no other. They are friendly, helpful and fun to be around. They create the kind of dining experience every restaurant should look to achieve. Customers leave happy having had a great meal and great dining experience.

3. The atmosphere is very cool. The huge grill and getting to watch your food be prepared is awesome. The restaurant is always clean and you can really tell the company and staff take pride in their establishment.

4. They really appreciate their customers. They staff will go out of its way to make sure you have an excellent experience. The managers are always on staff greeting and assisting customers. If you have a question or a problem they are quick to solve it. You can really tell they want to give you a great experience and that is why they keep customers for life!

5. The thing I love most about Genghis grill is how they care about the health of their customers. Many restaurants don't even give a second though to the health and well being of their customers but that is not true of Genghis. How many restaurants give their customers and opportunity like the Health Kwest? Not many that is for sure. They want you to feel secure in knowing that you are going to be served healthy, nutritious, fresh food that is good for your body and can be incorporated into a healthy diet lifestyle. I love Genghis grill for loving their customers so much to really care about them!

Purging your life and reclaiming your health

We find ourselves bogged down by so many things in life that we allow to control our lives without ever even realizing it is happening. We seem trapped in a cycle of a vicious system that is in place to keep us as consumers of products that are not only unhealthy for us, but are actually killing us. We are bombarded by fast food.  Quick and easy high fructose corn syrup laden foods line our shelves in the grocery store. With great advertising and empty promises they keep us coming back for more as we slowly poison ourselves.

Much of what we eat every day amounts to an addictive drug that has captured our brains, rewired us in to addicts, makes us sick and costs us billions of dollars to treat diseases that we do not need to have. This drug is known by its manufacturers to be addictive, harmful, and costly and it's perfectly legal. Food designers, processors and restaurants have discovered that by combining fat, salt and sugar with flavors, textures, and the right visual appeal they can create foods that we crave, foods that stimulate our brains to want more, that wire us to overeat.

We cannot change the food industry overnight but we can change ourselves and the choices we make. Companies like Genghis Grill should be applauded for their efforts to provide their customers with healthy delicious natural choices. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to prove through healthy eating and proper exercise anything can be achieved. We need to understand why we eat what we eat. We need to be aware of the foods that are bad for us with their super sized portions and teach our selves to avoid them. This should not be that hard. I mean remember, this is our LIVES were talking about here.

I, for one, will no longer allow myself to be tied down by the restraints of these unhealthy foods. I will no longer allow my health and wellness to suffer. I have broken the cycle and never want to go back. When you finally free your body from the junk that has been choking your system your body will really come alive and happily receive these new wonderful options. When you begin this transformation it will not be easy at first. Remember your body is addicted, just like a drug addict, and will have withdrawals.  But rest assured this will pass and you will begin to feel better than you ever have. We crave these unhealthy choices because we have been wired to do so. Its time to pull the plug, its time to reboot the system.

Join me in my journey and don't think that you have to be overweight to be unhealthy. Although obesity is a clear sign of an unhealthy lifestyle it is far from the only. We can all stand up and say we will not sit by and allow companies to make their profit off the poisoning of its own customers. We can all make better choices and become better, healthier, happier people. More full of energy and life than we ever imagined. Join me and PURGE your life of these detrimental things. Do not waste another minute of your precious life. Our short time should be spent happy and healthy, lets do this together.

One day closer to the Kwest!

Good evening friends, family, fans and fellow Kwesters! Today was another great day and one day closer to the official start of the Health Kwest. There is a great quote that I have heard many times over the years but each time I do it strikes a cord. "Remember the man who quit?  Neither does anyone else". This could not be more true. Quitting is the easiest thing to do and everyone can do it. Persevering through all obstacles and when climbing that mountain, no matter how many times you slip and fall, you keep pushing forward. This will build the character and fortitude it takes to reach the summit every time.

The walls and obstacles in front of us are most often ones that we have made for ourselves. Don't get in your own way. Step aside and allow yourself to go further than you ever dreamed. The only thing standing in your way is YOU. We can be our own worst enemies or our own best friends. We may not always do the right thing but learning from those mistakes, making better choices, and always striving to do better, we can all be better people for ourselves and the ones we love. Each day is a blessing on this earth and I will not take another second for granted, I hope you do not either. I am more driven and dedicated than I ever have been in my life. My health and my life depend upon my success and I will succeed.

Have a wonderful night everyone and once again, thank you Genghis Grill and good luck to all the other Khantestants!

I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'
